According to Fred Glynn, many people who want to get into a fitness routine sometimes make the mistake of conflating strength training with bodybuilding. Although, both activities involve lifting a lot of weights, there are distinctions that novice fitness buffs should know about. In this article, we’ll talk about what sets strength training and bodybuilding apart.

First and foremost, strength training and bodybuilding are divided by purpose. Strength training involves developing physical strength so the body is better able to handle everyday activities like lifting cargo. Bodybuilding, on the other hand, involves maximizing one’s physique. There’s the matter of how the body looks and how big the muscles are.

The next thing that sets bodybuilding apart from strength training is the diet. In strength training, you can eat pretty much what you want since you’re not doing it for looks. Bodybuilding, on the other hand, requires more discipline when it comes to what one eats. Certain muscles of the body, like the abs, for example, only become visible the less fat the body has. Bodybuilders aim to lessen body fat and increase the size of their muscles to show the cuts in their physique.

Finally, the training regimens are different. Bodybuilders aim for hypertrophy or the excessive bulking up of the muscles so they will have more reps. Strength training has less repetitions but the goal is for more strength. To develop strength, the muscles must be placed on extended tension for a length of time so there are less reps. The caveat is the trainee must do the lifting slowly to place the muscles in duress for a longer period of time, Fred Glynn adds.
